LITTLEROCK (2010):
Two Japanese siblings must halt their American road trip when their rental car breaks down in rural California. Despite her lack of English and her brother’s insistence on leaving, Atsuko is charmed by Littlerock, striking up a romance with one of the locals, and elects to remain in the quirky small town. Director Mike Ott deftly uses expressions and silences to express the cultural and linguistic barriers confronting Atsuko in her strange new environment. Littlerock was named Best Film Not Playing in a Theater Near You at the 2010 Gotham Awards, and director Mike Ott won the Someone to Watch Award at the 2011 Independent Spirit Awards.
